Guest Blog Post from Matt Palazzolo- a Golf Digest Top 50 Golf Performance & Movement Coach

Golf is a very dynamic sport. The complexity of the golf swing can place a tremendous toll on the body. Golfers tend to focus on two major aspects of their game when it comes to physical performance: distance and longevity. Exercise & recovery are paramount to golf and facilitating the effectiveness of both distance and longevity.

In this article we will focus on longevity.  When it comes to sustainability, it’s important we look at how to best engage in recovery protocols from a weekend of golf.

Here are three tips that golfers of all levels can utilize to promote recovery:

#1: Mobility Work

Watch any Tour event on TV and you will see several different types of swings. When you work with a golf coach they’ll often compare your swing to that of a professional, possibly suggesting you feel “laid off” at the top or “less rounded” at impact. Not surprisingly, the best typically do it the most efficient way because they do it for a living. They have thousands of hours behind it. Most amateur golfers don’t have that luxury so we need to work on improving mobility to increase the swing efficiency.

When it comes to mobility, we also see the importance of working on increasing range of motion within certain parts of our bodies, regardless of our “swing type”. There are plenty of resources available on any number YouTube and Instagram pages (for example: @coach.palazzolo) where you can see stretches and exercises that help with a golfer’s mobility. When referencing these sources, look for exercises that help with hip internal rotation, shoulder external rotation, thoracic mobility, and ankle/big toe (yes, big toe) mobility.

#2 Soft Tissue Work

If you’ve ever gone to a chiropractor or physical therapist, they’ve probably done some minor massage or soft tissue work to help with joint function. The beauty is that a lot of the basic but very helpful soft tissue work that your therapist may perform, you can perform on yourself with practice and a few essential “tools”. All you’ll need is a foam roller or lacrosse ball.

I also use Therapist Preferred’s 400mg THC Free CBD Sports Cream when working areas like my calves, upper traps and lats (shoulder/upper back and neck) to help with getting a little less friction when working these tissues.

Note- for direct advice about specific conditions and to learn these maneuvers first hand, it’s always best to speak with your trusted therapist/sports medicine professional.

#3 Golf Specific Movement

When it comes to gym work, we definitely see the importance of strong hips, a strong back, and a functional core. There are tons of exercises that we can do that help with increasing our strength and function here.

But how often do you train rotation? And more importantly, how often do you train your pivot, especially with load? When it comes to golf, it’s super important for us to keep our joints healthy and our bodies comfortable within the position we swing from. Taking a club across your chest while in your living room or on the course waiting to hit your shot and working on your pivot will pay out dividends when it comes to the longevity of your golf game. As you advance, you can begin to take resistance bands and bars to work on tour pivot. Again, it’s suggested that advancing from bodyweight to load should be done and monitored by your trainer or therapist.

Golf is an amazing sport because you can continue to play as you get older. Performance and distance are at the forefront right now. Everyone wants to hit it further. As much as performance coaches like myself want to help you as golfers get there, we also know the importance of prioritizing quality movement patterns and recovery protocols. If you’re serious about the game, and serious about staying healthy for golf, what you do in the gym and at home should heavily reflect what you want to feel and do on the course. For me and my golfers, this becomes the priority, as does the utilization of proper recovery tools and supplements.

CBD Sports Creams

Now that many people in the country can get back to some semblance of a workout & activity routine, muscle aches and soreness are coming back as well.  With this increased activity, many people are turning to hemp derived topical CBD sports cream products for localized relief of these problem areas.

Topical CBD products come in many different formats. These include creams, lotions, balms, salves, sticks, roll-ons, gels, oils and sprays.  We understand that it’s daunting to choose the best option for your daily use so we want to provide our perspective on this topic based on several years of research & development and practical use.

The primary difference between each type of topical solution is the amount of oils, water, emulsifying agents (often wax) and preservatives in the formula.  For a good, simple explanation of the difference between a cream, salve, lotion and body butter read this article from Plantiful.

As a brand developed by a Doctor of Physical Therapy and used extensively with high performance athletes, weekend warriors and those just looking to maintain an active lifestyle, we experimented with many of the CBD topical options for Therapist Preferred.

Ultimately, we determined that sports creams with premium, THC free hemp derived CBD provide the best combination of localized delivery, rapid absorption, deep penetration, consistency, aroma and texture and we proudly offer multiple options for our customers.

Throughout our testing and continued product sampling of the available options from our competitors, we experienced the fastest and longest lasting results with sports creams. We also commonly find that balms, salves, sticks and roll-ons don’t rub into the skin easily, thus diminishing the impact of the CBD (and quite often leaving a gritty residue or stain on clothing).

The absorbability of Therapist Preferred’s sports creams make them ideal for daily use on knees, elbows, necks, legs, backs and hands.  Pretty much any place on your body that can get sore, can benefit from a trusted CBD sports cream.  CBD sports creams can also be used effectively for dry, itchy skin.

In a previous article “How Much CBD Should I Take?”, we shared our recommendation to apply CBD sports creams 2-3 times a day for maximum benefit.  That article should be a helpful reference not just for the topicals, but to also learn more about other Therapist Preferred CBD products (capsules, tinctures and gummies) that can complement the use of a sports cream.

Now, let’s go through our current lineup of CBD sports cream options to help you determine the best one for you.  As always, all Therapist Preferred products are THC Free, 3rd Party Lab Verified, and Made in the USA.

  • 400mg CBD Sports Cream– Our brand new cream is 2x stronger than our “Original” best selling cream (below).  This soothing cream combines 400mg of premium CBD in an easy to use 4oz pump bottle with camphor, menthol, lavender and other essential oils.  It smells great when applied and the calming aroma fades away quickly while you feel the cream working on your sore area(s) for hours.
  • 200mg “Original” CBD Sports Cream– LIMITED AVAILABILITY REMAINING! Our first ever product was this 200mg cream that quickly developed a loyal following due to the aroma, texture and fast acting nature.  Now that we have a new formula that is twice as strong while maintaining all of the attributes of the original, this product will be phased out over the next couple of months. If this was a product you used often- buy it before it is gone or upgrade to the new & stronger formula.
  • 250mg Unscented Sports Cream– This premium sports cream is highly concentrated, packed with 250mg of CBD in a 1oz “on the go” air pump bottle. Our research showed us that when it comes to using a topical product, many people are scent averse or have strong allergies to essential oils, so this unscented cream is a perfect alternative.  It is also an ideal size for travel or “on the go” use as it can fit easily in your gym bag, toiletry kit, purse or even your pocket

When it comes to choosing the best topical CBD product for you, do what active people all of the country are doing every day- try Therapist Preferred now.

CBD with Melatonin for sleep

Have you always been an avid exerciser?  Have you adjusted your exercise regime as your body has changed?  Are you still burning the candle at both ends?  Your answers to these questions and many more impact the quality of your sleep.

Most of us require exercise and the corresponding endorphin rush to “survive” and get through our day to day activities.  Don’t get me wrong I still love waking up and taking that five mile run on the streets, treadmill or even better on the boardwalk or beach.  As I get older, I’ve just realized that I had to perform my daily exercises ‘smarter’.  When you sit down and take the time to think about the benefits of exercise for your mind and body, the list would go on and on.

Let’s think about your best days of exercise, activity or athletic achievement. Were they directly related to hydration and sleep?  If we gave this a little bit of thought, I think we would all come to realize that these two components were directly related to our performance.

When you take care of yourself and exercise regularly, you will most likely notice that your mind and body feel sharper throughout the day and you will sleep better at night.  Research has shown that physical activity can provide excellent benefits for your nighttime sleep.  Making exercise part of your daily routine may contribute to an overall healthier body and more peaceful night’s sleep.

When and how much should you exercise?

Regular exercise in the morning or early afternoon have been proven to be the most beneficial times of day to exercise.

The Physical Activity Guidelines published US Health & Human Services Department recommend a MINIMUM of one hundred fifty (150) minutes of moderate to rigorous exercise weekly for “Substantial Benefits” and note that additional benefits are gained for exceeding three hundred (300) minutes.

At Therapist Preferred, we believe that any and all activity is a positive and encourage you to find the time to exercise for a healthier you!

Is there a better time of day to work out?

As mentioned above, research has shown that there are optimal times of day for working out to maximize the direct health benefits on the body

Interestingly, morning workouts seem to have the greatest effect on influencing one’s sleep.  Early afternoon exercise plays a close second to leading to a good night’s sleep. This early afternoon time of exercise leads to an increase in overall body temperature by about three (3) degrees. As the body’s temperature decreases over time and resets, the body’s autonomic nervous system will trigger a response that induces drowsiness for sleep.

Not everyone who exercises will experience the increased sleep benefits described but again, exercise will benefit your general wellness.

How can exercise affect your sleep?

Through decades of research exercise has been shown to improve overall sleep quality.  Exercise has been known to increase the length of time we all spend in ‘deep’ sleep.  This REM or ‘deep’ sleep is where the body tends to do its best healing.  Deep sleep has a direct link to improving immune function, increasing cardiovascular health as well as helping to manage stress and anxiety.

Do you ever have difficulty sleeping?

Some people find it difficult to fall asleep and or stay asleep.  Ever notice the connection this has to our daily stress?  Most people don’t even realize the effect that stress has on our bodies.  This can cause decreased appetite, restlessness, and deficiencies in our quality sleep.  One way to combat stress would be to implement a regular exercise routine. Along with healthy eating habits, exercise will certainly lead to better sleep patterns.

Even after regular exercise and healthy eating, some people still may suffer from irregular sleep.  Natural sleep aids, like melatonin, may be a good option in those situations after consulting your healthcare professional.   Melatonin is commonly combined with CBD to help you relax and sleep more naturally.

Therapist Preferred’s CBD Soft Gels with Melatonin combine our premium, THC Free 25mg Soft Gel with 1mg of Melatonin.  As mentioned in our previous post, we recommend taking 1-2 of these capsules 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime for a more restful sleep.

Sleep is such an integral part of our health and wellness routine so make sure you are making it a priority!

Therapist Preferred CBD products

With greater focus on health, wellness and immunity in the world right now we’ve been getting a lot of questions from customers and potential customers about the various methods of taking CBD and the recommended dosages of each method.  To help answer these questions, we want to provide a brief outline of Therapist Preferred’s products.

First, let’s briefly discuss what Cannabidoil (CBD) is to better frame the discussion.  CBD is a compound that is naturally produced by the cannabis plant and the oil is widely available in various formats throughout the world.

The body has an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) that is activated by endocannabinoids produced naturally by the body.  Science has shown that the ECS also responds to external cannabinoids, like CBD, to produce a variety of positive benefits.

CBD oil is primarily extracted from the Cannabis Sativa (hemp) plant, the taller and more fibrous cousin of the Cannabis Indica plant.  Cannabis Indica produces large amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and thus is cultivated for marijuana.  While legalized in many states for recreational and/or medical use, Cannabis Indica is classified as a controlled substance by the Federal government.

And just to be clear, hemp is NOT marijuana.  In order to be legally cultivated through the 2018 Farm Bill, there must be less than .3% THC.  The CBD oil in Therapist Preferred’s products are made from PCR hemp which is a CBD rich strain containing up to 10x the concentration of generic industrial hemp and no discernible amounts of THC.  You can check out the 3rd party lab results on all of our products here.

While CBD products are widely distributed, the Federal Drug Administration has not broadly opined on the medical uses, so we can’t, and will not make any medical claims about our products. You should always speak to a licensed medical professional before taking any new products.

For the further discussion of methods and dosages for CBD below, we will focus on just the methods that Therapist Preferred carries- capsules, gummies, tinctures, topicals and yes, even dog treats.

To Show CBD Soft Gels

Soft Gel Capsules

There are many reasons people prefer taking soft gel capsules over the other available options including the fact that you will always know the exact dosage. Our capsules are small, tasteless and odorless making them easy to take by most people either at home or on the go.

We have two different Soft Gel Capsules, both with 25mg of our premium CBD per soft gel with the only difference being Melatonin.

CBD Soft Gels for Everyday Wellness – As the name suggests, these easy to swallow, water soluble capsules are for everyday use as part of your overall regimen. We recommend taking 1-2 soft gels daily at a consistent time period (i.e. morning, nighttime).  Customers commonly start with one initially and add a second if needed.

CBD Soft Gels with Melatonin for Sleep:  These capsules contain the same premium formula as the Wellness Capsules with the added benefit of 1mg of Melatonin.  Therefore, they are intended for nighttime use only. We recommend taking 1-2 of these capsules 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime for a more restful sleep.  Many people take these capsules prior to a long flight as a replacement for prescription sleep aids. (Note- make sure the plane is in the air first; last summer I made the mistake of taking the soft gel right after boarding an overnight flight, only to have the flight canceled!)

Both soft gel capsule products come in a bottle of 30.

Highlight CBD Gummies

Gummies

We are excited to have recently released a new formula for our gummies with 30 per bottle.  These cube shaped gummies combine a delicious green apple flavor with 10mg of premium CBD in each one and lightly coated with organic cane sugar.  Made with clean ingredients, our gummies are vegan, gluten free and of course, THC Free.

As mentioned, each gummy contains 10mg of CBD so we recommend 1-3 per day.  The cubes can be easily cut in half to allow you add in increments of 5mg to find the right balance for you.

CBD Tincture

Tinctures

Using a dropper to place CBD oil under the tongue is commonly referred to as taking it “sublingually”.  The sublingual gland is a vein under the tongue that allows for rapid absorption into the bloodstream so it is amongst the most popular delivery methods.

Our Mint Flavored Tincture uses olive oil as the carrier oil creating a refreshing combination without the “earthy” after-taste often associated with this delivery method.

Each bottle contains approximately 30 servings (a full dropper) with 15mg of premium CBD per dropper. We recommend starting with 1 dropper daily- morning or night and the beauty of a tincture is that you can easily take more or less.  People often drop CBD oil into their daily morning beverages (coffee, tea, smoothie, etc) although doing so will generally bypass the sublingual vein, making it slightly less effective.

CBD Cream

Topicals/Creams

For many people, their introduction to the world of CBD is through a topical product like a cream, a balm or a salve designed to treat your body “locally”.

At Therapist Preferred, we currently only carry creams as our research and development process has showed us that CBD creams provide the best combination of rapid absorption and ease of use.  Unlike salves, CBD creams are made with water so they generally absorb better with little to no residue.

Therapist Preferred currently carries two CBD cream products coming in different sizes and concentrations.

First, our best selling CBD Sports Cream which comes in an easy to use 4oz pump bottle.  Each bottle contains 200mg of our premium CBD with a calming combination of menthol, camphor, peppermint, lavender and other essential oils.  This cream rubs in easily and won’t stain your clothing.  We recommend using a “nickel” size amount of cream 2-3 times a day on the areas you are looking to treat.

Our other cream is our new “on the go” Unscented Cream which has proven to be very popular already. This cream is highly concentrated with 250mg of CBD in a 1oz air pump.  We know many people are scent averse or have strong allergies to essential oils, so this cream is a perfect alternative.  Given the concentration, using a “dime” size amount 2-3 times a day should work well.

CBD Dog Treats

Dog Treats

CBD is safe for pets and works in the same way as it does for humans in conjunction with the body’s naturally producing Endocannabinoid system.

Our CBD Dog Treats combine 2mg of our premium CBD with a vet-formulated beef flavored bite sized treat in a bag of 30 treats.  As a general rule, we recommend 1 treat for every 25lbs and those dogs under 15lbs should take a half a treat.

Hopefully this has answered the questions that may have brought you to this page.  If you have additional questions or want to set up a phone consultation to determine the right products for you, please email me at brett@therapistpreferred.com.

CBD in the world of Physical Therapy

Working in the health care industry has been quite a rewarding experience for me over the past 19 years.  Meeting and getting to know so many wonderful people has been nothing short of amazing.  I’ve been fortunate to have met and been mentored by many of the best manual medicine minds of today.

Implementing a biomechanics and functional approach to diagnosis and treatment has led me to where I currently stand professionally with my own clinic, SCORE with PT in Rye, New York.  I am always striving for excellence and to explore new options to implement in my practice to best serve my patients.

Being a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) has allowed me to meet all types of people.  I have had the honor of treating everyone from weekend warriors to professional athletes in all areas of the sports world.  One thing they all have in common is the necessity for a speedy recovery from an injury and quality of life.  As a therapist, the best tool in my arsenal is listening to a patient’s needs. Besides providing palliative care, and a program to take home, I wanted to offer more.

Our rehabilitative field is continually changing as is the world around us!  One hot topic in the field of physical therapy over the last year has been, “Does CBD have a place in physical therapy clinics?”  First of all, great question, but I think we should begin by first explaining “What is CBD and how does it work?”

CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, which is one of the molecules that is found in the cannabis plant.  Our body has its own endocannabinoid system (ECS) which some say is responsible for homeostasis (equilibrium in our body).  Our ECS is comprised of CB1 receptors present throughout the body (many are in the brain) and CB2 receptors which are more common in the immune system.  CBD seems to direct the body to utilize more of its own cannabinoids, rather than attach to the receptors itself.

Many of my patients have utilized various CBD products in conjunction with the manual therapy I provide, so I do believe that CBD can play a key role in delivering homeostasis.

It is important to note that CBD will not replace any medicine that has been prescribed by your physician.  You should always speak to your physician regarding the possible benefits and side effects of taking CBD or any supplements.

If you do consider taking CBD as a complement to physical therapy or your overall wellness regimen, you will likely find that all CBD brands are not created equal.  When choosing a CBD brand, you want to look for certain qualities in the product.  Brands that are transparent about their ingredients, process of oil extraction and third party lab testing should be atop your list of potential options.

Our brand, Therapist Preferred is THC free, gluten free and proudly made in the USA with industry leading nanotechnology.  Our products contain no metals, no harsh chemicals, and are farm bill compliant.   All of our products are third party lab tested and the results of each batch we craft can be seen by scanning the QR code on each of our products.  We are a brand FOR active people, BY active people and we use all of our products ourselves.

Therapist Preferred offers a variety of CBD delivery methods.  Everything from an easy to use cream, to a natural sleep aid.  We even have dog treats to calm your family pup! What is most important is that our customers love our product.  They trust our company and reorder time and time again. Our best advertising is truly our happy customers who tell their family and friends about their love of Therapist Preferred CBD products.

There is one way to find out if CBD products work for you…try it today!  Besides our cream, capsules with melatonin and dog treats that I referenced above, we also carry a mint tincture, green apple flavored gummies, and everyday wellness capsules.  We are continuing to add new products (including a new travel size, super concentrated unscented cream) so follow us on social media (@ThrpstPreferred) and sign up for our mailing list here.

We at Therapist Preferred want to thank our loyal customers and look forward to those of you that want to join our family in the future!
